A comprehensive survey of workers undertaken by ComPsych revealed a great deal of workplace stress and dissatisfaction in this day and age in the United States. According to the study, a full 67 percent of workers indicate that they experience high stress in the workplace. These individuals oftentimes feel overwhelmed at work, feel that they are not in control of their jobs and work duties.
An interesting side note to the study involved the most significant way stressed and overwhelmed employees address these issues in the workplace. 53 percent of the workers in the study indicate that they take stress breaks during the workday to communicate with fellow employees. The study underscores the importance of developing a sense of camaraderie among employees in the workplace. There are a number of strategies that can be employed to develop a sense of camaraderie in the 21st century workplace.
Resolve Conflicts Quickly
A key strategy to employ to build a sense of camaraderie among employees is to resolve conflicts in a timely manner. This includes not only conflicts between employees, but conflicts between managers and subordinates on the team.
Brewing and unaddressed conflicts initially hamper relationships between the specific individuals involved in the situation. However, when left to fester and not addressed, conflicts spread throughout a team or employee cohort.
Enhance a Sense of Ownership
Another strategy to utilize to instill a sense of camaraderie among workers is to ensure that they have a sense of ownership. Each team member needs to feel invested in the goals and objectives of the company. As part of developing this sense of ownership, the unique talents of each individual employee needs to be recognized and appropriately utilized.
This type of investment and sense of ownership tends to develop stronger linkage between employees on a team. The drive to accomplish goals because of a sense of ownership ultimately depends upon workers becoming a true team with a sense of camaraderie among the members.
Setting aside time on a regular basis to engage in team-building exercises is another wise course to aid in the development of worker camaraderie. The Internet is awash in employee team-building experiences that readily can be assessed. In addition, in the brick and mortar world, professional consultants exist that are eager to work with businesses in the implementation of team-building exercises.
Team-building experiences can take less formal approaches and be very effective. For example, camaraderie can be established and built in a workplace when employees have opportunities to more formally interact. This can be accomplished by something as simple as the provision of an employee dining and break area in the workplace where team members can congregate and socialize.
